Our Symphony and Concert Conductor

Christopher Jones has called the shoreline his home since his youth. After graduating Guilford High School with cello in hand, his undergraduate studies in Music Education were at UConn. While there, Chris was active in a cappella groups, orchestras, ballroom dance team and formed his string trio, Arioso, which played over 250 events in its decade of activity. Chris earned a Master of Music in Conducting from Colorado State University and completed preliminary coursework for a Doctorate of Conducting at the Hartt School.

In 2005 he started teaching teaching orchestra at Adams Middle School in Guilford. From 2012-2021 Chris was the assistant conductor for the Neighborhood Music School Student Concert Orchestra. In 2021 Chris took over the Guilford High School orchestras and assists in teaching small group band lessons at the middle school.  

​While not making music, Mr. Jones enjoys sailing, hiking and skiing with his wife (Katie, also a music teacher) and two kids.

Our String Ensemble Conductor

Alexander Svensen enjoys an active career as a classical, jazz, and pop double bassist and educator. As principal bassist of the Norwalk Symphony and assistant principal bassist of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra (in MA), and a member of the Vermont Symphony bass section, Alex maintains a busy and dynamic freelance career across the Northeastern United States. His playing has been hailed in the New Haven Register and the New York Times as "exemplary" and “honorable.” Alex has studied with world-renowned musicians at the Yale School of Music, Carnegie Mellon University, and SUNY at Fredonia, and has performed as principal, substitute principal, solo, and section double bassist with countless orchestras and chamber groups across the northeast and midwest.

As an educator, Alex has a Bachelor's degree in music education, offers workshops and master classes in public and private schools - including as the former music director of the Yale Tango Orchestra - and has maintained an active private teaching studio for over a decade. Alex lives in Madison.

In his spare time Alex enjoys hiking, climbing, and snowshoeing in the Adirondack high peaks and Vermont's green mountains, as well as the lovely local trails here in Connecticut.

Our Wind-Brass Coach

Frederick “Eric” Gerhardt is the Instrumental Music Director at Westbrook High School where he conducts the Concert and Jazz Bands.  Additionally, Mr. Gerhardt teaches Acoustic Guitar, UCONN ECE Music Theory, History of Jazz and Rock & Roll, and Beginning Band.  He has previously served as Chairman for CMEA Southern Region and All-State Jazz Ensemble.  

Mr. Gerhardt earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Ithaca College, and his Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from the Manhattan School of Music. 

In 1999, Mr. Gerhardt became the Band and Jazz Director at Elisabeth C. Adams Middle School in Guilford, CT, teaching 7th & 8th Grade Bands, Honors Band, and Jazz Band. His groups earned top ratings in both state and regional festivals.

Mr. Gerhardt has worked as a freelancer performing with the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Brooklyn Philharmonic, and other prestigious orchestras.  He also has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and on Broadway.  In Connecticut, he has performed with the New Haven Symphony, Orchestra New England, Bridgeport Symphony, Stamford Symphony, the Goodspeed Opera, the Mohegan Sun Casino Orchestra, and the Shoreline Jazz Collective.  Mr. Gerhardt's impressive career has rewarded him with numerous honors and awards as a performer and educator.

In his free time Eric enjoys fishing (fly fishing is his favorite), barbecues, pretending to be a golfer, and being a huge Mets fan.
